Gypsy Canyon: Glamping in Todos Santos, Mexico

I recently had the opportunity to stay with Gypsy Canyon in Todos Santos, Mexico for a glamping retreat in partnership with the property. Am I a camping girl? Nah. Am I a glamping girl? Yes! Especially when the glamping site is set up in one of the most beautiful and interesting parts of Mexico – Baja California Sur. Read on to hear all about my experience glamping in Mexico in the desert.

Note: Gypsy Canyon hosted me for a complimentary stay that was arranged by another blogger, but all opinions are, of course, my own.

What is Gypsy Canyon?

Gypsy Canyon is a stylish glamping venue and retreat site set in a cactus grove just outside of Todos Santos, Mexico. It’s about a 5 minute walk to the beach. Gypsy Canyon is owned by the same people who own La Bohemia Hotel Pequeno, a boutique hotel in the heart of Todos Santos.

Gypsy Canyon hosts onsite retreats and events, like weddings, birthdays, wellness retreats and private parties. They also rent out their glamping tents for offsite events.

What is Glamping?

Glamping is glamorous camping. Basically, camping with more luxurious and elevated facilities.

I’m not going to lie, glamping is the only kind of camping I can really get into. And yes, I’ve been real camping. I’m from Canada – camping is practically our national pastime.

I’ve tried it. I didn’t like it.

Give me access to a hot shower and a real mattress or I’ll just stay home.

Glamping generally means that the campsite is already set up for you (no need to pitch your own tent), you typically sleep on a real bed and mattress, towels and bedlinens are provided and bathroom facilities are available.

Where is Gypsy Canyon?

Gypsy Canyon is a minute drive outside of Todos Santos, which is a charming and colorful town in Baja California Sur, Mexico.

Todos Santos has been deemed a “pueblo magico” (magical village) by the Mexican department of tourism and has truly retained its small town local charm. The Gypsy Canyon glamping site is located in the desert across the street from the beach.

The natural setting in Baja California Sur is very wild – you have cacti growing just about to the edge of the beach, which is a wide sand bar with the waves of the Pacific Ocean crashing down. Bring bug spray and sunscreen!

Getting to Gypsy Canyon

You will need to rent a car to visit Gypsy Canyon. We flew to Los Cabos from NYC. We then rented a car and drove about an hour to Todos Santos.

I was originally a bit nervous about driving in Mexico, but this was an extremely easy drive. This is such a laid back part of Mexico, I shouldn’t have been so surprised. Even the dirt road leading to Gypsy Canyon was a breeze to handle in our tiny rental car.

Is Glamping in Mexico Safe?

I felt extremely safe the entire time we stayed at Gypsy Canyon – both with respect to my person and my valuables.

The owners and staff of Gypsy Canyon are part of the local community. They know everyone in town and have a finger on the pulse of what’s going on in the area. I felt extremely comfortable the whole time.

If you have valuables you are worried about, there is a safe in the main office. However, I didn’t even bother using it because it didn’t feel necessary.

The Gypsy Canyon Glamping Experience

I’ve been glamping before. The first time was in Morocco, unfortunately long before I started blogging, The second time was by the beach in NYC, which you can read about here. So, before I even decided to go glamping in Mexico, I was already primed to love the experience.

We arrived at Gypsy Canyon in the evening, and all we had to do was relax. The entire campsite (glampsite?) had been set up for us and we barely had to lift a finger. Now that’s my type of camping!

Our tent didn’t have electricity but we were able to charge our phones in the communal kitchen. Unfortunately, the WiFi was extremely glitchy during our stay.

To be honest, as a full time blogger, I need reliable WiFi wherever I go. However, if you’re glamping in Mexico in the desert, for the most part you will enjoy being unplugged.

We arrived after dark, so I wasn’t able to get a real sense of the site until the morning. However, I was struck by the silence and the stillness in the area. And the fact that I could see zillions of stars in the sky, since there is very little light pollution in the area.

In the morning, I woke up early and was excited to check out the property! The overall design aesthetic is bohemian, artistic and colorful. It is completely in line with the vibe of Todos Santos. I absolutely loved the textiles on the beds, the woven chairs on our tent’s deck as well as the communal open air kitchen.

The bathrooms are in renovated shipping containers and have hot water, flushing toilets and decent water pressure.

Our retreat included breakfast each day, dinner on the second night made by a wonderful local cook, a yoga lesson, a cooking class and an excursion to Las Palmas beach. On our last night, we enjoyed the sunset from the property and then drank wine at a bonfire under a blanket of stars.

We were only a small 4 person retreat, so it was all fairly laid back and we weren’t on a tight schedule. I get the feeling that everything and everyone in Todos Santos is laid back. So if you’re looking for a rigid type A experience, Gypsy Canyon, and maybe Todos Santos itself, isn’t really for you.

This is more of a go with the flow type of place, which is really the beauty of the whole experience.

All in all, I had a great and restful stay with Gypsy Canyon. If you have the opportunity to go glamping in Mexico with Gypsy Canyon, you’re in for a stylish and relaxed experience.

However, I’m willing to admit that 2 nights of glamping was enough for me and I was excited to move on and stay at their sister property, Baja Hotel Pequeno, in town for a few days.

Have you ever been glamping? Let me know in the comments!

xx
