Instagrammable Day Trip: Lavender Fields Near NYC
When you think of lavender fields, I bet you immediately think of Provence, France. What if I told you that you can day trip to a gorgeous, lush and instagrammable lavender field only a few hours from New York City? Well, you can!
Lavender by the Bay is a 17 acre family owned lavender farm located on Long Island’s North Fork. With over 80,000 plants, at peak bloom, walking through its fields felt like I was surrounded by never ending rows of lavender. It’s one of the most magical and unexpected places that I have visited in the New York area.
When to Go
You should check out Lavender by the Bay on Instagram or Facebook to ensure that your visit coincides with the lavender’s bloom, which can vary from year to year. I checked their Instagram page before my trip to the Hamptons in July and was excited to learn that my visit was planned on the last day before the French lavender would be harvested.
The biggest and most impressive bloom is the French lavender, which I saw in July. Lavender by the Bay also has two smaller harvests of English lavender: the first is usually in June and the second is usually in late August or early September.
How to Get There
The farm was about a 50 minute drive from my hotel in Southhampton, NY. I took a Lyft to Lavender by the Bay as part of a sponsored Instagram partnership (for which I was compensated by Lyft). You can easily get a Lyft from the Hamptons to Lavender by the Bay, but it can be more difficult to find a Lyft to take you back to the Hamptons from the farm. Long Island’s North Fork only recently allowed ride sharing apps to operate in the area, so there aren’t as many Lyft drivers in the North Fork as compared to the Hamptons.
There is parking on site if you have a car. You can also take the LIRR to the town of Greenport which is a 20 minute bike ride to Lavender by the Bay.
The Experience
When we arrived at Lavender by the Bay, we paid a $6 entry fee (it’s $9 on weekends) and I was immediately blown away by the lush and fragrant beauty of the farm. I was also blown away by the sheer number of bees in the lavender fields (ohhhh THAT’s how you make lavender honey, lol)!!! I’m afraid of bees so it took a lot of courage to walk into the lavender fields. But I took a deep breath and jumped right in.
Wasn’t it worth it? My only regret is not buying something from the farm shop – they had the most amazing lavender essential oil that I wish I had taken home with me!
I would have loved to take a drone to photograph the flower fields but Lavender by the Bay does not permit drones on their property. 😢
Hours and Location
Lavender by the Bay is located at 7540 Main Rd, East Marion, NY, which is about 80 Miles from NYC. Their hours vary depending on the season and can be found here.
If you’ve visited a lavender field, I’d love to hear about it! Especially if you have any tips about visiting the flower fields in Provence, since I’m planning to spend some time there next year!
xx
