A Sunflower Field Near NYC: Pindar Vineyards

In July, I fulfilled my dream of visiting a sunflower field in bloom. The best part? I was able to visit a dreamy sunflower field right near my home city of NYC. That’s right.  There’s a sunflower field near NYC that will fulfill every Instagrammer’s dreams.  Pindar Vineyards is a winery on Long Island’s North Fork that boasts a beautiful sunflower field and is only a 2.5 hour drive from NYC. It’s an absolute must see for anyone living in the New York area.  A sunflower field AND a vineyard all in one place? Count. Me. In.

WHEN TO GO

I visited Pindar Vineyards during a trip to Southhampton, NY in July. The sunflowers’ peak bloom is generally from July until mid-August but I recommend checking Pindar Vineyard’s Instagram and Facebook for updates. We visited in mid-July which seemed to be toward the end of the 2018 peak bloom.

HOW TO GET THERE

Long Island’s North Fork is considered the “anti-Hamptons” because of its more chilled out and less scene-y vibe. You can definitely visit the Hamptons and the North Fork on the same trip if you plan to stay for a couple of nights.  If you have a car or use a ride sharing app, you can reach Pindar Vineyards in less than an hour from Southhampton.

Pindar Vineyards is not easily accessible by public transport, so if you want to see this sunflower field near NYC I recommend driving (or having a designated driver if you plan to imbibe!) from either NYC, the Hamptons or elsewhere in the North Fork. Pindar Vineyards has free parking on site.

PINDAR VINEYARDS WINE

Since Pindar Vineyards is, well, a vineyard (duh), you can buy a glass or bottle of wine from their tasting room and take it outside to the patio or even into the field. The vineyard’s speciality is its Sunflower Chardonnay.  The grapes for the Sunflower Chardonnay came from a special vineyard site of only 3.9 acres and is considered to be a limited special reserve wine.

According to Pindar Vineyard’s website, the sunflower chardonnay is “lightly oaked and has vanilla and caramel notes, with a back palate of apple and pear”. I don’t really know what that means TBH. But I can tell you that we bought a bottle to drink while we explored the vineyard grounds  and I enjoyed it, even thought I usually don’t like chardonnay.

CUT YOUR OWN SUNFLOWERS

You can also borrow a pair of shears from the tasting room and cut your own sunflowers for $2 per flower.  If we weren’t staying in the Hamptons for a few more days, I would have LOVED to take some fresh sunflowers home to Brooklyn with me! I love displaying fresh flowers at home, so having a sunflower field near NYC is a dream come true!

PINDAR VINEYARDS IS ECO-FRIENDLY

We also noticed a large windmill while we were exploring the grounds.  More than 80% of Pindar Vineyard’s electricity is produced by carbon and emission-free wind power.  You can see the base of the windmill in the photo below. It is directly behind the sunflower field.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

We only explored the tasting room, wine shop and the sunflower field but Pindar Vineyards has more than 500 scenic acres and is the largest vineyard on Long Island. It grows 17 varieties of grapes, makes 23 varietals of wine and produces 70,000 cases of wine a year!

Pindar Vineyards is located at 37645 Main Road, Peconic, New York. It is open daily from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. for wine tasting and 6 p.m. for sales. In July and August, Pindar Vineyards stays open until 7:30 p.m. for tastings and 8:00 p.m. for sales on Fridays and Saturdays.

Pindar Vineyards has had their sunflower field near NYC for about 30 years, so I’d love to hear if you’ve had a chance to visit it. If not, if you’ve visited a different sunflower field, let me know in the comments! I’d love to hear about it!

Also, you can check out my post about visiting a lavender field near NYC. It’s located near Pindar Vineyards so you can see them both in the same day!
